Matthew Wild’s new production, Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman, is all set to make waves this August!
Shakespeare in the Park at Maynardville Open-air Theatre
See Shakespeare’s well-known tale of passion, love and confusion, Twelfth Night, come to life at Wynberg’s beloved outdoor venue
Ease into the first months of the new year with a bit of The Bard in the magnificent green expanse of the Maynardville Open-air Theatre, which continues to present its popular annual Shakespeare in the Park productions. Once again, passion, love and betrayal take centre stage in the local production of Twelfth Night, which runs from Tuesday, 17 January until Saturday, 25 February 2017.
Twelfth Night is perhaps one of Shakespeare’s best known plays; it follows the story of two siblings, twins in fact, that become ship wrecked and separated during a storm. Viola and Sebastian think the other is lost forever, and are forced to make the best of the situation they can. Viola finds herself in Illyria and is forced to disguise herself as a boy, but she falls passionately in love with Duke Orsino. Duke Orsino is madly in love with Countess Olivia, who in turn falls for Viola (who is disguised as man named Cesario), and the love triangle develops from there.
Once Sebastian arrives in Illyria, Countless Olivia finds him and declares herself smitten, they wed in a secret ceremony, leaving Duke Orsino furious. When the twins are reunited in Countess Olivia and Duke Orsino’s presence, the truth becomes clear and the play ends with a declaration of love, but between who we aren’t telling.
Watch as the marvellous actors at Maynardville breathe some true skill and energy into a classic work of fiction. You couldn’t ask for a better playwright and you certainly couldn’t find a better venue, so don’t miss out of this fabulous story told by talented professionals.
