Knysna, but not the Knysna you think
Locals help us uncover the hidden treasures of this Garden Route gem
The exhibition examines the contemporary situation at the notorious Ramkraal (formerly Bloemfontein prison) near Bloemfontein that was officially closed in 1994 after a near century of service.
Since then the old fort-like prison has become a haven for numerous souls on the fringe of society, including Zimbabwean refugees, artists and crafters, homeless children and Rastafarians.
The exhibition will expose viewers to the uncertain future of this small amalgamated community living free from persecution at Ramkraal – a structure formerly associated with oppression and ‘cruel justice’. Another key focus of the exhibition is the architecturally striking building itself and its immensely rich yet unprotected heritage spanning 115 years.
