Athol Fugard’s The Painted Rocks at Revolver Creek at The Fugard Theatre

Historical paintings take on a controversial legacy in this play set in a pre-liberated South Africa

Presented by Eric Abraham, Athol Fugard’s latest play is set for its South African premier at the Fugard Theatre for a limited season only from Tuesday, 23 August, until Saturday, 24 September 2016.

The Painted Rocks at Revolver Creek is inspired by a farm worker-cum-self-taught-artist called Nukain Mabuza, and how he navigates a pre-liberated South Africa. It’s Fugard’s most recent work, adding to an oeuvre that earned him the Lifetime Achievement Tony Award in 2011, along with numerous other accolades and international acclaim.

After several extensions in New York following its spectacularly successful debut, Fugard’s play is bound to keep South African audiences riveted as it delves into race, identity politics, the weight of a legacy, and the shifting face of our nation.

The plot goes as follows: After spending most of his life adorning rocks on a koppie at Revolver Creek with bright splashes of pretty painted flowers, Nukrain faces his final challenge: to cover a huge boulder at the summit in blooms. Nukrain is aided by his young friend Bokkie, but before they can begin their task, Elmarie Kleynhans, the landowner’s wife, arrives, and makes various demands.

These directives clearly demonstrate the widening fissures in a South Africa nearing the end of its apartheid era, and, later, when Bokkie (otherwise known as Jonathan Sejake) returns to Revolver Creek, it is to confront the legacy left to him by the incident at the creek.

Delving into the limits of human experience set against the complex tapestry of an evolving political landscape, Fugard seeks to unravel our past to give insight into our future. The performance is brought to life by a stellar South African cast that includes Anna-Mart van der Merwe (Begeerte, Binnelanders), Tshamano Sebe (The Fugard Theatre’s Master Harold and the Boys), and Sne Dladla (The Fugard Theatre’s Orpheus in Africa, District Six – Kanala) who recently won the Fleur du Cap Theatre Award in the category of Best Supporting Actor in a Musical for his various roles in David Kramer's Orpheus in Africa. The young Bokkie is shared by two gifted newcomers, Likho Mango and Siya Jantjie.

Co-directed by Athol Fugard and Paula Fourie, The Painted Rocks at Revolver Creek promises to be enlightening, brave, educational and insightful, making it a must-see for local audiences.
