From Friday 15 – Sunday 17 June the 19th Napier Patat Festival will transform the normally sleepy Overberg town of Napier into a hive of activity.

Set in the rolling hills between Caledon and Bredasdorp, the family-friendly festival is jam packed with events that will be sure to create a memorable weekend away (it’s about 1.5 hour’s drive from Cape Town).

The Napier half-marathon and 10km race
The Napier half-marathon is known as a tough (but beautiful), circular race which is run on a hilly course. The race starts off rather deceptively with an easy 2-km downhill canter through the village before it heads out into the farmlands. The course becomes a gravel road at the 6-km mark, at which point participants will find themselves huffing and puffing through fields of giant proteas.  

That said, the hard work truly begins after the halfway mark, with a steady climb through fields of barley, wheat, oats and canola. The road climbs for over five kilometres; the 16-km marker is the highest point of the race. Walkers are welcome, and there is a 10-km fun run.

Family Fun
Those who are less inclined to run in a circle for numerous kilometers can stroll along and have a look at the various stalls at the finish line, where top-class live music will be performed throughout the course of the day. This year’s festival includes a number of cooking demonstrations a-la “celebrity chef” style (with tastings) by accomplished professionals.

There will also be open gardens with a refreshing twist...in that all visitors get to to rate and judge the green displays.

All in all, expect a healthy dose of small town charm and plenty of hospitality.
