Women watched in horror as Donald Trump labelled Hillary Clinton a ‘nasty woman’ in the last presidential debate of 2016. Pretty soon, being a ‘Nasty Woman’ was considered a compliment to many women across the world. Local playwright Dara Beth, was similarly shocked and will imminently debut her new project, Nasty Womxn, at the Alexander Bar, Café and Theatre on Monday, 31 October 2017 which will run until Tuesday, 14 November 2017.
Nasty Womxn (note: spelt with an ‘x’ to step away from the male - ‘man’ or ‘men’ being the qualifier for what a woman is) takes the form of a multi-sketch comedy performance that sees three local females take the roles of mythological feminine heroes. These include Medusa and Persephone, and many more less known women (the ones that the history books conveniently forgot about). When asked to explain the play in an interview with Theatre Scene Cape Town she said, “It is a collection of sketches of womxn in the here and now, whose characters and stories are inspired by the original stories of womxn-cum-monsters in Greek mythology. I’m playing with how most original stories of womxn in Greek mythology are dependent on the violence towards or violation of womxn by men. And the reality of how that’s perpetuated the way we envision most womxn characters today.”
Dara Beth has directed productions that have been to the KKNK and Grahamstown National Arts festival. Some of these include The Udine and So-Called. The three women starring in Beth’s latest venture, Kathleen Stephens, Masali Baduza and Maria Vos all feel strongly about the cause, and will bring a passion to their respective roles.
