Best Burger Special at Sotano every Wednesday
Tuck into two lamb burgers and fries for the price of one every Wednesday
Sotano by Caveau’s lamb burger special is becoming an institution. The 2-for-1 deal – it includes a side of fries alongside each patty – is available at the Mouille Point Mediterranean eatery every Wednesday from 5pm, 52 weeks a year, for R110.
Though, don’t be fooled into thinking the swish seaside restaurant’s fare is on par with the aforementioned fast food chain’s Big Macs and Happy Meals. On the contrary, Sotano is devoted to serving up simple, gourmet food made with real, fresh ingredients that speak for themselves.
Thus, as expected, the lamb burger, which is built from free-range mince, topped with a tower of homemade tzatziki, hummus, avocado, lettuce and tomato and served open-faced on a freshly
-baked slice of rosemary focaccia, is anything but a sloppily thrown together sandwich void of all nutrition and taste.
“It’s a good, substantial gourmet burger,” sums up the restaurant’s co-owner, Brendon Crew.
Drawing in part on his Lebanese mother’s culinary traditions for inspiration, he, along with his two business partners, opened Sotano in December 2010 with the aim of bringing an easy, breezy eatery to the airy Mouille Point neighbourhood.
Sotano, which means ‘cellar’ in Spanish, is everything from an ambient wine bar, as the name suggests, to the home of delectable three-course meals. Its laidback outdoor section boasts sweeping views of the area’s extensive promenade and the unravelling Atlantic beyond, and its indoor space flaunts a stylish atmosphere perfect for a more formal occasion or colder weather.
Similarly, its menu is also designed to suit a vast range of whims and fancies. Thus, if the lamb burger isn’t enough for you, have a gander at the tapas, the starters or the desserts. It goes without saying that, after glancing at the mains, you’ll make a mental note to return at a later date: light, summer options include Seafood Linguini and Grilled Fish with Salsa Verde and, in winter, heartier items, like Braised Rabbit and Glazed Duck, grace the menu.
So, hurdle the midweek hump with this cheap-as-chips special, but be warned, chances are you’ll be back to sample some of Sotano’s full-priced fare as well. Also, keep in mind that on Sundays between 4pm and 7pm, the reggae band The Rivertones plays a chilled-out sundowner set.
