Athi-Patra Ruga's Queens in Exile at WHATIFTHEWORLD

The renowned artist’s latest body of work is about telling better stories, ultimately creating a world where the exiled can reign again (watch trailer)

One of the country’s foremost contemporary artists, Athi-Patra Ruga’s latest exhibition, Queens in Exile, opens at the edgy WHATIFTHEWORLD gallery in Woodstock on Wednesday, 29 November from 6pm to 9pm and will be running until Saturday, 27 January 2018.

The extensive selection of work in this collection is about telling better stories, highlighting South African history and reinventing those stories where the ostracized are now the heroes. Most of the pieces in the collection comprise meticulously hand-embroidered petit point tapestries, of the kind Ruga has enjoyed critical acclaim for.

The work will be displayed over three floors in the gallery with a film installation, titled Over the Rainbow, forming an important part of the exhibit.

The exhibit will focus particularly on current political and social topics and the status of these affairs today. Viewed from an alternate reality where the experiences of those who had suffered under colonial rule are distorted, Athi-Patra Ruga channels a utopian theme to represent these histories.

Athi-Patra Ruga is a world-renowned South African contemporary artist whose forte is visually representing parodies which critique history and social systems. He undertakes various identities in these art pieces and is the medium in showcasing these histories in a form of fantasy or devastation.
