A one night showing of swing documentary Alive and Kicking

‘Cause a film don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing!

There’s nothing quite like a night out at the movies. Sitting back as you munch on buttery popcorn in the dark, and becoming immersed in the world of the story unfolding on the big screen in front of you never gets old. On Saturday, 8 July, get caught up in the playful, exhilarating domain of swing dance so rarely seen on the silver screen. The Labia Theatre will be hosting a premiere viewing of Alive and Kicking, a US documentary all about the vibey culture of swing and its knack for bringing out the happiness in those who partake in it. Written, directed and produced by Susan Glatzer, It’s sure to have you tapping your feet and wiggling your hips.

The evening has been organised by Cape Town Swing, an NGO that works to make this vintage dance and music more widely accessible and appreciated. Their local dancers hold classes on swing dancing. The NGO hopes to build an inclusive, happy community of swing-lovers, so along with classes they often put together various socials and parties where folks come together to whirl and bop. These social dances aren’t about showing off professional moves and there’s no pressure to dance more than you’d like to. It’s all for fun and it doesn’t matter whether you’re a beginner, intermediate or advanced swing dancer.

This one-night-only showing of Alive and Kicking is sure to be a great way to get the word about swing out to a wider audience and inspire more to join Cape Town Swing’s collective. Poignant, passionate accounts of people whose lives have been lifted through swing dancing are featured throughout the film.

Dancers speak of swing’s power to heal the emotional disconnect we so often feel in these modern times. According to some accounts, swing will make you forget entirely about your cell phone; there’s something about it that sweeps everyone up in its joy and forges genuine connections between people who interact through it. You’ll likely feel the urge to try and experience its positive influences yourself afterwards! What’s more, the scenes of euphoric dancing will have your spirits soaring.

The 2016 feature-length flick also takes you through the history of this phenomenon with the use of stock footage, starting in the days of swing in its earliest form, lindy hop. Alive and Kicking has not yet been shown in the Mother City, so this is an extra-special event. There’s something very retro-esque about swing, as there is about the Labia Theatre; there couldn’t be a more fitting venue than this independent art cinema. The old-time style movie house in Gardens, an area in the City Bowl, is known for being the place where you can find art nouveau movies. It was originally an Italian Embassy ballroom which explains some of the extravagant, polished details in its interior, and the nostalgic features that blend with aspects of modern life to create an avant-garde feel.

Here you are able to purchase snacks and beverages. Along with the usual bottles of water and cool drinks, wines, beers and ciders are available here! You can take them in with you to enjoy as you sit back for the show.

Cape Town likes to shimmy and shake whenever there’s a good party to go to. Along with swing, sokkie and moshing in the night club, another thing you will find the Mother City partaking in is gumboot dancing.
