Rocking Hillcrest Farm for all the right reasons

Hillcrest Farm, Durbanville will be ‘Rocking For Rhinos’ on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 May when top SA bands come together to help save the most endangered member of our famed Big Five. So far, no less than fourteen top performers have been secured for the two days of fun in the sun. Saturday features acclaimed indie band Ashtray Electric and heavier rockers, When Karma Sleeps, as well as the ever impressive and equally zany serial guitar slapper Tombstone Pete.

Sunday’s concert is a must for all fans of Blues music, featuring the smooth whiskey-soaked voice of Natasha Meister and the immensely talented Sixgun Gospel band, amongst other top acts.

So get your mates together for a day (or two) of awesome music and great times on Hillcrest’s sprawling lawns, and if that’s not enough to convince you, take comfort in the knowledge that all proceeds will go towards the rehabilitation of a male rhino named Higgins who survived a poaching attempt near Cape Town.

The Cause
443 Rhinos were killed in South Africa in 2011 alone, far surpassing the already depressing total of 333 in 2010. This year, 186 rhinos have already been poached. Rhinos are on the verge of extinction with some subspecies already extinct. The end of 2011 saw an increase in awareness for this more than worthy cause, sadly it took the deaths of 443 rhinos for the country to sit up and take notice.

The concert is aimed at everyone with a heart, and all proceeds thereof will go to Higgins, who lost 80% of his eyesight in a poaching attack at Fairy Glen Reserve near Cape Town. The event will be named “Rocking For Rhinos” and the team has pledged to make it an annual Cape Town music event with a different recipient each year.
