Winelands Tea at Pierneef à La Motte
Enjoy an old-Cape high tea at La Motte wine estate
Spending time in the Cape Winelands is a treat. Taking the time to drive out into this incredible area gifts you with an immediate sense of peace and calm as your car stretches its legs and moves away from the claustrophobia of bumper to bumper of city traffic.
The scent of fynbos, buchu and other botanicals hangs in the air. The promise of a relaxed day in Franschhoek, either hiking, wine tasting or indulging in fine dining, is enough to prompt one to visit this charming town as often as possible. Thanks to the staff at Pierneef á La Motte restaurant on the La Motte Wine Estate, those wanting a spot of tea can pop in for their Winelands Tea.
You can have your cake and eat it too at this award-winning restaurant. According to the website’s account of the history of the Old Cape, “Guests were always welcome, with the coffee or bossie (rooibos) tea constantly steaming on the warmer… Regardless of what was served though, the lady of the house enjoyed using her best porcelain.” Building on this tradition Chef Michelle Theron has conceptualised a delectable menu that pairs a serving of sweet and savoury morsels with the selection of teas they have on offer.
The Winelands Tea, available between 9am and 5pm from Tuesdays to Sundays, is served in either Pierneef à la Motte, on the sunny stoep, or in the garden, where guests get to watch squirrels frolic in the flora, as they enjoy their tea and sweets for R165/p. An ultimate indulgence for tea drinkers, you’ll be presented a delicate tea-set made especially by famed fine artist and ceramicist, Ella-Lou O’Meara, as you take in the sophisticated yet relaxed atmosphere of the restaurant and wine estate at large.
Not only is there a variety of red, green, black, white, matured and fruit-infused teas from local and international producers on the menu, but coffee lovers can get their fix from a delicious locally blended java if they so wish. Guests also have the option of toasting to their opulent affair with a glass of bubbly at an additional cost of R65.
Nibbles are served in an exquisite glass cloche. Smoked salmon sandwiches with cream cheese and chives, sausage rolls, soetkoekies (sweet biscuits) and macarons are just some of the treats you’ll sample as you enjoy your tea.
