The Royal Hotel’s Dine & Dream Accommodation Special

Stay at Riebeek Kasteel’s colonial treasure on a Thursday and eat for free

As the oldest licensed accommodation in the Western Cape, it comes as no surprise that Riebeek Kasteel’s Royal Hotel holds fast to an old way of thinking. It leaves liqueur-filled chocolates on the pillows, keeps a fire burning in all of its main rooms, serves giant gin and tonics at sunset and offers complimentary coffee, tea and homemade cake every afternoon.

In a nutshell, it’s the kind of place where genuine old-world country hospitality prevails, and thus it makes complete sense that the colonial treasure is offering a little something extra to CapeTownMagazine.com readers in honour of the summer season. Why? Well, just because.

That is, every guest who books a Thursday night stay at The Royal Hotel from 1 October 2014 to 30 March 2015 is entitled to a free five-course meal at the property’s reputed in-house restaurant (drinks excluded). Simply mention the CapeTownMagazine.com deal when making the reservation and you’re good to go.

And while the charming winelands property may channel the days of David Livingstone and Paul Kruger in the way of its aesthetic and certain parts of its experience, the on-site eatery’s contemporary fare is bang on trend.

Chef Francois, who’s sweated over stoves at La Colombe and Manna Epicure in Cape Town, keeps tabs on what’s hot and fresh in the global culinary scene and crafts both the seasonally changing a la carte menu and the special tasting menu (the latter of which applies to the special) accordingly. This summer, expect to find inclusions infused with a touch of Asian flair, like prawn ceviche and roast duck spring rolls, as well as simple classics, like a beautifully cooked fillet, fancy fish ‘n chips and more.

And of course, as one of the hotel’s most obvious talking points is its sense of setting, whether you take your meal inside before the crackling hearth and the dark mahogany fittings or outside on the open restaurant terrace in the presence of rolling vineyards, a shimmering dam and the sparkling Riebeek night sky, you’ll find your dining experience wrapped up in a certain kind of romance.

So, hit the road on the Thursday, take the Friday off if you’re working and make a weekend of it.
