Cape Town loves beer; we also love gin and wine but this event doesn’t have much to do with those two, so let’s shelve them for another day. On Friday, 26 May 2017 Woodstock Brewery is launching their new creation; the Sugarman. Affectionately named after a very specific beloved musical maestro (Rodriguez), this beer will live up to his name and surely be nothing short of a masterpiece.

The concept for Woodstock Brewery was first conceived in Korea, when the owner decided to make the move back to the Mother City. Andre Vilijoen started the company because breweries are said to be the perfect fusion of creativity, science and business (plus, he really loves beer). Since then, Woodstock Brewery have developed some of the most popular craft beers in the city. The Calinfornicator, sitting at a whopping 6.5% vol, is the chosen drink of beer-lovers everywhere. It has citrus fruit notes and as an IPA (Indian Pale Ale) it’s super refreshing. Their range also includes Happy Pills, Pot Belge and Hazy Daze - all of which you can find at most bottle stores if you’re looking to try some speciality brews (which you should, they’re amazing).

Getting back to the Sugarman however, this new beer is like nothing else in their range. Woodstock Brewery thought outside of the barrel for this one and as a result have created something completely original. The brew is officially a ‘Belgian Quad’ style beer, but they’ve made some interesting innovations. They aged the brew in red-wine oak barrels, giving it a complexity that is not often achieved by beer makers. The wood barrels coloured the beer slightly and as a result the dark and inviting beverage has a silky tan coloured head - a thing of beauty. The Sugarman has tastes of black cherry, mocha and spiced dark rum. The beer sits on your palate like a taste explosion and finishes off with an “exciting yet serene complexity”.

On the night, the Woodstock Tap Room will be open normally and you’ll be able to enjoy the Sugarman along with some delicious food and a chance to taste some of their other products; nothing works better with beer than even more beer. Grab your beer loving friends and head down to the state of the art Woodstock Brewery for an evening of good beer, good food and great memories; ideal Friday night, right?
