McGregor Poetry Festival

The perfect fest for aspiring poets and lovers of words

Journey to McGregor, a quaint and pretty place,

To spin yarns of words and recite poems with grace,

Meet artisans, farmers, philosophers and more,

And be immersed in a space where passion’s at the fore.

Calling all lovers of words and aspiring poets! The quaint town of McGregor (two hours away from Cape Town) is set to host its fourth annual poetry festival from Friday, 26, until Sunday, 28 August 2016.

This year’s list of poets boasts a lovely diversity of performers across all ages and backgrounds. Here are a few names to look out for: Stephen Symons, a PhD student at UCT, will be reading a selection from his Questions for the Sea; Margaret Clough and Stephanie Saunders will be entertaining audiences with light verses on aging and unexpected journeys; Christine Coates will read verses from A Way of Life which reflect on the Camino; Robin Winckel-Mellish will delight guests with her Etchings in dust; Part-time teaching assistant at UCT’s School of Architecture Graham Dukas will delve into subversive wit and unexpected logic through his selection of poems; Mavis Vermaak will perform Death Poems to her own music; Rhodes University literature lecturer Dan Wylie will read from Sailor: Poems for my father, and Slow Fires; and Lerato Sibanda will read a hodge-podge of poetry in an act titled Dreamer in Wander Land.

One of the most important aspects of the festival is its intention to mentor upcoming poets. The Growing Poets Mentorship Programme was founded with the aim of identifying and assisting emerging young poets in the vicinity. There’s also an open poetry competition this year for unpublished poets – simply submit one or two poems to info@mcgregorpoetryfestival.co.za and cross your fingers! The winning entries will be published in the McGregor Poetry Anthology.

More information about this year's vibrantly verbose affair will be released soon, but for now, please subscribe to our newsletter for updates.
