Comrades Solo Exhibition at the Stevenson Gallery

Comrades Solo Exhibition at the Stevenson Gallery

Delve into the meaning of democracy with this series of thought-inspiring installations

Featuring a series of exceptional works by Botswana-born Meleko Mokgosi, this evocative exhibition displays an array of figurative and text-based paintings that delve into the relationship between communism and southern African liberation movements. Comrades is part of the second chapter in Democratic Intuition, the artist’s eight chapter installation project Pax Kaffraria, and is Mokgosi’s first solo exhibition in the country in more than a decade.  The show opens on Thursday, 21 January, and ends on Saturday, 27 February 2016.

One of the most important aspects of Mokgasi’s work is his examination of language and how it was used to articulate the burgeoning democracy of the struggle years, and how it evolved in the years that followed. Mokgasi analyses the relationship between democracy and citizens, looking at whether the two shape each other – if such a reciprocal interaction exists.

Large, powerful and immersive, this exhibition is a testament to the talent harboured by this continent, and the conceptual creativity of today’s contemporary artists. If you’d like to meet Mokgosi and discuss his work in person, make sure you don’t miss his gallery walkabout on Monday, 18 January at 4pm.
