Tucked neatly away on Cape Town’s most celebrated culinary strip aptly sits True Italic-Osteria del Capo. Offering patrons a genuine “taste of Italy”, the little Bree Street osteria seeks to introduce Mother City folk, and everyone else, to the soulful cuisine and welcoming essence of true Italian fare (mainly from the Emilia Romagna and Sicily region). A typical vegetarian Italian dish (although it’s certainly a delightful treat for meat-eaters as well), Parmigiana is an oven-baked meal comprising slices of deep fried aubergine layered with Napoletana (tomato-based) sauce, fresh basil and finished with a mozzarella fior di latte crust. Strictly following the original Sicilian recipe (the origin of the meal is claimed by the region of Sicily); True Italic’s Parmigiana is prepared daily in-house using only the freshest proudly Italian ingredients possible.
Comprising all the traditional flavours – from the tomato to the mozzarella – that are synonymous with Italy, this dish is an absolute must-try for an all-encompassing Italian experience. Parmigiana can be enjoyed as an antipasto to share (it’s quite a large portion) or as a vegetarian main meal.
Served on beautiful wooden wine barrel boards, these plates are ideal to start your meal and True Italic experience in a convivial way. Offering three different sizes (small, medium and large), each board comprises a wide selection of Italian imported cured meat such as prosciutto di parma, mortadella pistacchio from Bologna, salame milano, spianata (chilli salame) as well as an assortment of homemade Italian cheeses – freshly made by the restaurant’s Italian cheese master – such as mozzarella fior di latte, scamorza (smoked mozzarella), provolone picante and ricotta further accompanied by a variety of freshly baked focaccia bread.
Offering an array of authentic Italian flavours, True Italic’s Italic Boards are a great way to begin an Italian experience as patrons are able to get a real taste and idea of the different regional Italian specialities all on one plate. Perfect to share.

BOOKING AND PRICING FOR TRUE ITALIC’S SIGNATURE DISHES
True Italic’s Parmigiana costs R110 while the Italic Boards, which come in three different sizes (small, medium and large), cost R180, R260 and R300 respectively. Although True Italic does cater for walk-ins, it’s essential for patrons to book from Thursday to Saturday as the inner city Italian haunt is known to be very busy during those evenings. Both dishes can be ordered for takeaways.
Tip: True Italic offers private dining in its downstairs canteen “La Tavernetta dei Poeti”. The tucked-away area is as ideal for birthday and anniversary celebrations as it is for corporate functions and business dinners. The secret room can seat up to 40 patrons and can be booked by either calling +27 (0) 21 418 7655 or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. Please note that corkage is not allowed.
