Journey across the globe with this rocking music revue show in Durbanville

Rocking in a Free World, a musical journey around the globe and through the decades, flies onto the Barnyard Theatre stage in Willowbridge, Cape Town from Wednesday, 17 April to Sunday, 26 May 2013.

This rock ‘n’ roll shindig pays tribute to classics from international artists all over the world, from down under and the US to the Queen of England’s backyard and Mzansi’s doorstep. Fun for both adults and little ones alike, this family- and kid-friendly show celebrates music from all eras and takes the audience on a wild, toe-tapping trip -  no luggage check necessary.

What to expect at the Barnyard Theatre’s Rocking in a Free World

Buckle up your seatbelts and let this jiving show take you to England, America, Sweden, Brazil, Greece, Spain, Jamaica, Australia, Italy, Wales, France and Mzansi for a party that only rock stars can throw.  

The expedition kicks off in Scandinavia, where pop-rock duo Roxette perform their hit ‘How Do You Do’, before it heads off to Wales for a sample from the tiny nation’s greatest exports and singing sensations, Tom Jones and Shirley Bassey. Next on the itinerary is France – the act pays tribute to the country’s musical marvel, Edith Piaf - and just like that the musical aircraft lands in Spain to wow audiences with rhapsodies from the rumba flamenco style royalty the Gipsy Kings. Zig-zagging across the world, the flight then heads off to the Mediterranean country of Greece for a rocking rendition of the Hellenic motherland’s national party anthem – Zorba the Greek.

Afterward, the adventure touches down in chilly England for a layover with a multitude of English pop icons, like the late and great Amy Winehouse, The Beatles, and of course, rock father Freddie Mercury, along with living legends, Adele, Joan Armatrading and The Rolling Stones.

The second half of the show warms up with the sultry Latino sounds of Shakira and Santana before chilling out to the reggae beats of rasta legend and soothsayer Bob Marley in Jamaica. Though, don’t get comfortable in your smoky reverie just yet, because this plane is heading down under to meet shock-rockers from Australia – AC/DC.

After a lightning quick layover in Italy – there’s just enough time for a classic from Ill Mondo – the iron bird criss-crosses flight paths, and the voyage pulls into the birth place of rock ‘n’ roll to bring legends and pop sensations, like Lady Gaga, James Brown, Meat Loaf and Tina Turner, to the stage.   

And that’s it. The flight head’s back to sunny (or rainy, depending on the weather) South Africa for some homegrown tunes and beats from truly iconic artists, like Brenda Fassie, Sipho Hotstix and Mango Groove!

Tickets to the Barnyard Theatre’s Rocking in a Free World

Tickets are available via Barnyardtheatres.co.za and cost R130p/p for shows from Wednesdays to Sundays (start time is 8pm). On Tuesdays (start time is 8pm) and Sundays (start time is 2pm), audiences enjoy a special ticket price: pay R170 for one ticket and get another one free.
