Take the road less travelled on a two-day adventure to the Klein Karoo
ABSA Calitzdorp Port and Wine Festival
This quaint town in the heart of the Klein Karoo opens its cellar doors for a swishing great time!
Join fortified wine fanatics as they flock to one of the Klein Karoo’s most charming hamlets for the annual ABSA Calitzdorp Port and Wine Festival from Friday, 14 to Monday, 17 June 2013.
Located just four hours from Cape Town along the scenic Route 62, Calitzdorp, known as the Port wine capital of South Africa, comes alive every winter with an intoxicating line-up of tastings, entertainment and athletic acitivities for both young and old.
Similar to the Douro valley in Portugal – the spot where fortified wine originated – the Mzansi village owes its Port success to the favourable climate and the dedicated craftsmen who use time-honoured traditions and top-notch quality fruits to produce the finest Port wines in South Africa.
Highlights at the 2013 ABSA Calitzdorp Port and Wine Festival
The Port festival line-up promises to be bigger and better than ever before with fair favourites along with a slew of new events to keep visitors entertained all weekend long.
While the historical Calitzdorp Railway Station will once again be the epicentre of the extravaganza – lifestyle and food stalls, a biodiversity expo, vintage tractor exhibition and children’s and adult entertainment is scheduled all day every day – the port-producing cellars around the town will also host special premier events.
Festival-goers are afforded the exclusive opportunity to be the first to sample the unique Calitzdorp Blend (made with Portuguese cultivars) from the barrels of the eight participating cellars. Additionally, those with a sweet tooth can sip and savour decadence at the chocolate and Port pairings at the Calitzdorp Cellars, and for those who’ve acquired the taste for olives, the Withoek Cellar is set to showcase these plump fruits and their by-product, olive oil.
What’s more, budding vintners and wine aficionados are invited to take an informal journey into the world of Port with winemakers from De Krans, Boplaas and Withoek at the Boplaas Cellar. Foodies will also be delighted with both the culinary experience offered at the Boplaas Cellar and the “Small Plates of the Karoo” gastronomic adventure at Calitzdorp Wines (led by chef and owner of Silver Orange restaurant, Leon Nel, along with one of the local winemakers).
Aside from the gourmet treats, the festival offers loads of kiddies entertainment, tractor rides, art and history meanders and live performances by local acts and artists. Specifically, renowned opera singer Zanne Stapelberg and critically acclaimed guitarist James Grace perform their exclusive show, Canciones en Española’s (Songs in Spanish), at the local Dutch Reformed Church.
While the celebration starts in earnest on Saturday, 15 June, the festival hosts media representatives on Friday, 14 June 2013. Though, eager beavers who arrive on the Friday can still get in on some of the action with a cocktail demonstration at the historic Calitzdorp Railway Station or catch a classical concert at the Axe Hill Cellar.
Whether you’re a wine connoisseur or just a big drinker with a penchant for partying, this event is undoubtedly a social calendar highlight.
