Cape Town International Jazz Festival 2011 Line-Up

Youssou N'Dour
Most certainly one of the big artists in this year’s festival line-up. Born in 1959, Youssou first achieved fame as a twelve-year-old who sang at religious ceremonies; by sixteen he was a de facto star, singing with one of the most popular bands of the 1970s, Etoile De Dakar. In the 1980s, as leader of the Super Etoile, he developed a new African form of music known as mbalax.

Earth, Wind & Fire
Another big name in the line up is Earth, Wind & Fire. During the 1970s, a new brand of pop music was born - one that was steeped in African and African-American styles - particularly jazz and R&B but appealed to a broader cross-section of the listening public.

Wayne Shorter Quartet with Brian Blade, Danilo Perez & John
This 77-year-old saxophonist is at the centre of every innovation that occurred in jazz in the last 50-years. Shorter leads his stellar quartet made up of pianist Danilo Perez, bassist John Patitucci, and drummer Brian Blade.

Gang of Instrumentals (SA)
A South African group that fuses electro, disco, funk, pop and African rhythms.

Simphiwe Dana (SA)
For anyone in doubt that Simphiwe Dana is the reigning queen of Afro-soul, must look at what the vocalist has achieved since the launch of her 2004 debut album, Zandisile. That CD not only went platinum, it won Dana the Best Newcomer and Best Jazz Vocal album prizes at that year’s South African Music Award (SAMA) ceremony.

Patricia Barber (US)
Patricia Barber is revered for her pianism, the range of her contralto voice and her compositional abilities.

Monique Bingham (US)
For many people Monique Bingham and the live band Abstract Truth are synonymous. Bingham composed and sang much of the group’s repertoire. They together produced the hit “Get Another Plan”. In 1998, Bingham also penned and performed another Abstract Truth bestseller “We Had a Thing” which Mathias “Matty” Heilbronn later remixed into a soulful house tune.

Gazelle (SA)
Gazelle is more than a band. It is a satirical condemnation of corruption and antics by African despots. Using music, dance, art, photography and fashion; the group is an act of social commentary. Excellent to see a band like this in the line-up of this year’s Jazz festival.

Christian Scott (US)
Trumpeter Christian Scott is the 2010 winner of the Edison Best International Jazz Artist Award. With a prestige equal to a Grammy, the Dutch music prize rewards albums of outstanding quality.

Lisa Bauer (SA)
UCT student, Bauer launched her straight-ahead debut album in January 2010, Finding a New Way. The CD is a mix of original compositions and jazz standards such as Dizzy Gillespie’s “A Night in Tunisia” and Lionel Hampton’s “Midnight Sun”. In the album, Bauer also belts out a reharmonised version of South Africa’s evergreen tune; Alan Silinga’s “Ntyilo Ntyilo”.

Esperanza Spalding (US)
Esperanza Spalding’s bass-playing transfixes audiences and her multilingual singing hypnotises listeners; qualities that led President Barack Obama to invite Spalding to perform for him at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in Oslo in 2009.

Hanjin (Singapore/Hong Kong)
Known for his work as a music producer and songwriter for famous Cantonese pop artists like Jacky Cheung, Eason Chan and Leon Lai; Hong Kong-based Singaporean artist Tan Han Jin thrust himself to the fore when in November 2009 he launched his debut album, Raw Jazz.

Sandra Cordeiro (Angola)
An up-and-coming Angolan vocalist who fuses bossa nova with strong Afro-jazz styles. Last year, Radio France Internationale (RFI) selected the young singer in the Prix Découvertes competition as one of Africa’s best 10 musicians.

Dave Koz (US)
Dave Koz is a multifaceted artist. Not only does he play saxophone masterfully, Koz has added the singer title to his long resume. In his new recording “Hello Tomorrow” released last year, the 48-year old musician is on lead vocals on Burt Bacharach and Hal David’s “This Guy’s in Love with You”. For the last 14-years, Koz runs a yearly Smooth Jazz Christmas Tour which has grown into a 30-cities event.

Ivan Mazuze (Mozambique/SA)
Saxophonist and flautist Ivan Mazuze is the 2010 Mozambique Music Awards winner. His debut album Maganda was voted the Best Jazz Album and Best Jazz/Fusion Instrumental Album of the year.

The Flames – Official Reunion (SA)
Formed by three Durban brothers in 1963, The Flames became a household name with regular performances in the country’s major cities. Steeped in Atlantic soul and Motown sound, The Flames rose to be one of the country’s top pop groups. The Flames is the first non-white South African band to reach the Top 20 charts of the whites-only Springbok Radio.

Dave Ledbetter and the Clearing (SA)
A guitarist, pianist, vocalist and gifted composer from Cape Town, Dave Ledbetter also works extensively in live theatre and cabaret.

Hubert Laws (US)
Hubert Laws is one of the musicians that secured a place in jazz for flute; an instrument associated with classical repertoire. In the 1970s, Laws was the No.1 flautist in Downbeat readers’ poll for 10-years in a row.
